As the Asian Games officially commence in Aichi-Nagoya, organizers face intense scrutiny over modular housing conditions and a significant surge in athlete attendance.
The 2026 Asian Games, currently underway in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, serve as a significant stress test for the viability of decentralized, temporary athletic housing models in major international sporting events. Unlike the traditional Olympic model, which relies on purpose-built, centralized villages, the Aichi-Nagoya organizing committee has opted for a multi-pronged accommodation strategy involving hotels, a cruise liner, and modular container huts. This approach highlights the growing tension between host city budget constraints and the expanding scope of continental sports programs. As sporting bodies continue to incorporate niche disciplines like teqball and padel, the resulting surge in participant numbers is forcing organizers to move away from legacy infrastructure, potentially setting a precedent for future multisport gatherings that prioritize cost-effectiveness over traditional centralized housing.
The 20th edition of the Asian Games officially runs from September 19 to October 4, though preliminary competition in basketball and football preceded the opening ceremony at Nagoya’s Paloma Mizuho Stadium. While 11,000 athletes are competing, the total population of athletes and officials has ballooned to approximately 17,000, significantly exceeding the initial planning estimate of 15,000. This influx, exacerbated ity control across a fragmented housing network.
The most intense criticism has centered on the temporary wooden container huts, designed to be repurposed as disaster relief facilities post-Games. Reports indicate that these modular units have struggled to withstand recent weather events, with record rainfall causing leaks and temporary evacuations. Beyond environmental concerns, team representatives have highlighted structural inadequacies, with basketball officials reporting that the dimensions of the beds are unsuitable for taller athletes. While organizers have pledged to improve conditions, the disparity between these modular facilities and the luxury amenities of the docked Costa Serena cruise ship—which hosts between 4,000 and 5,000 participants—has become a point of friction among the international delegations.
This year’s event features 43 sports and 469 distinct events, marking a historic expansion in the program. Among the six sports making their debut are surfing, freestyle BMX, mixed martial arts, padel, teqball, and virtual taekwondo. These additions reflect the Olympic Council of Asia’s push to modernize the Games' appeal to younger audiences. However, the operational reality of managing 54 venues—some repurposed from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics—alongside the unpredicted uptick in attendees, has placed a severe strain on the resources allocated budgetary and logistical limitations, stating that the committee lacked both the manpower and funding to fully accommodate the final surge in participant numbers.
The immediate challenge for the organizing committee will be managing the negative optics and ensuring that the remainder of the Games proceeds without further structural failures at the housing sites. Given the public acknowledgments of budget and staffing shortages, it is unlikely that significant physical infrastructure upgrades can be made mid-Games. Instead, organizers will likely focus on administrative mitigation, such as attempting to redistribute delegations to better-suited hotels or enhancing the services provided within the cruise ship and container zones. Long-term, the dissatisfaction voiced ouncil of Asia may face pressure to revisit its athlete-to-housing ratios and quality standards for future iterations of the Asian Games to avoid similar reputational and logistical risks.
