The small East African nation of Djibouti has issued an urgent plea to the international community, seeking immediate financial and logistical support as it grapples with a sudden surge of refugees fleeing the conflict in Yemen. With a total population of fewer than 1.2 million people, Djibouti is currently struggling to accommodate the thousands of individuals crossing the Red Sea to escape the intensifying violence in their home country.
According to official statements from the Djiboutian government, the arrival of more than 2,500 Yemeni nationals in just a few days has pushed the nation's local resources to a breaking point. Interior Minister Omar Abdi Said emphasized that the current influx has already surpassed the country's national capacity, creating a precarious humanitarian situation that requires immediate intervention from global partners.
The government is bracing for a sustained increase in arrivals, with projections suggesting that the number of displaced persons could reach approximately 10,000 in the coming weeks. This anticipated surge threatens to overwhelm existing infrastructure, as the nation attempts to manage the immediate needs of vulnerable populations while balancing its own internal socioeconomic pressures.
The latest wave of displacement is a direct result of renewed, heavy combat in western Yemen.
