Dozens of people remain missing following a series of coordinated raids by armed militants on villages and a mosque in Nigeria's Niger State.

A wave of coordinated attacks in Nigeria’s central Niger State has left dozens of citizens missing, sparking widespread alarm across the region. Armed groups, identified Borgu Local Government Area on Friday afternoon. The assault began with coordinated strikes on the villages of Gidan-Zana and Kpenya before the militants moved toward the Kpenya Mosque.

Witnesses report that the attackers arrived in overwhelming numbers, armed with a mix of firearms, machetes, and knives. The timing of the assault, which occurred shortly after the conclusion of Friday prayers, suggests a calculated effort to capture a large number of individuals simultaneously. While police authorities have acknowledged the incident, official figures regarding the exact number of abductees remain unconfirmed, though local accounts suggest that more than 60 worshippers were taken captive during the chaotic operation.

The situation in Niger State has been further complicated own as Mahmuda intervened during the abduction process, engaging the Lakurawa fighters in direct combat. This clash reportedly provided a window of opportunity for some of the captives to escape, though the scale of the rescue remains unclear. The involvement of multiple armed factions underscores the deteriorating security environment in the border region near Benin.

Legislative representatives from the area have confirmed that the violence was not limited to a single settlement. Several surrounding villages were subjected to similar raids, creating a climate of fear and displacement. The presence of competing militant groups, each with differing ideological frameworks, has turned the region into a volatile theater of conflict, complicating the efforts of federal security forces to stabilize the area and protect civilian populations.

The recent events in Dekara reflect a broader, deeply concerning trend of mass abductions across Nigeria’s northwest and central regions. For years, criminal networks and ideological insurgents have utilized kidnapping as a primary tactical tool, transforming the practice into a sophisticated, multi-million dollar industry. These gangs often view captives as high-value bargaining chips, holding them for ransom or using them to exert pressure on local authorities during military operations.

The severity of the threat was further demonstrated as the violence spilled into the following day. Residents reported that the armed groups returned to the area, seemingly anticipating a government response. In a dangerous escalation, militants reportedly planted landmines on transit routes leading out of the affected districts. The lethality of these tactics was confirmed when a fleeing family lost their lives after their vehicle struck an explosive device, highlighting the extreme danger faced

In response to the escalating crisis, a joint security detachment has been deployed to Niger State to conduct damage assessments and initiate rescue operations. Law enforcement officials remain cautious in their reporting, focusing on stabilization efforts while attempting to verify contradictory accounts of fatalities provided the rural roads and secure the safety of those still held

The persistence of these armed groups, despite ongoing national efforts to curb a 17-year-long rebellion, points to a significant challenge for Nigerian security policy. As the violence migrates from the northeast into central territories, the need for a more comprehensive and localized strategy becomes increasingly apparent. For now, the residents of the Borgu Local Government Area remain in a state of uncertainty, awaiting further word on the fate of their neighbors and the arrival of sustained government protection.
