A 19-year-old suspect is in custody following a shooting at Virginia State University that left five people wounded, including one in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials have successfully taken a suspect into custody following a violent shooting incident that occurred on the campus of Virginia State University. The event, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, resulted in five individuals sustaining gunshot wounds. Emergency responders were dispatched to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at approximately 1:28 a.m. after receiving reports of the violence unfolding near university residence halls.

Upon arrival, police discovered the five victims suffering from injuries of varying severity. Medical personnel immediately began providing aid to those affected. While four of the victims were treated for their wounds, at least one individual remained in critical condition following the altercation. The university, a historically Black institution located in Ettrick, Virginia, served as the backdrop for this alarming breach of campus security.

In the immediate aftermath of the gunfire, the university implemented a campus-wide lockdown to ensure the safety of the student body and staff. The administration worked closely with local law enforcement to secure the perimeter and investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The lockdown has since been lifted, though the impact of the event continues to be felt across the community.

Authorities identified the individual apprehended in connection with the shooting as 19-year-old Camron Harris, a resident of Henrico, Virginia. Notably, investigators confirmed that Harris is not a student at Virginia State University, raising questions about how an outsider gained access to the area where the violence transpired. The suspect was located a campus dormitory.

Following his arrest, Harris was processed bility of bail. Legal proceedings have already commenced, with authorities securing felony warrants for four counts of malicious wounding and four separate counts related to the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Officials have indicated that these charges may be expanded as the investigation progresses and more evidence is gathered.

The swift apprehension of the suspect brought an end to the active search, but the legal process is expected to be lengthy. Prosecutors are currently reviewing the case to determine if further criminal charges are warranted based on the extent of the injuries and the specific details of the confrontation. Harris remains in custody as the state prepares its formal case against him.

In the hours following the shooting, Virginia State University issued a formal statement acknowledging the distress the event caused for students, faculty, alumni, and their families. The administration emphasized that the safety and well-being of the campus community remain their primary objective. To address lingering concerns, the university police department has committed to maintaining an increased and visible presence throughout the grounds as the investigation into the incident continues.

The university has also reached out to the student body through official communication channels, urging them to monitor their university email accounts. These messages provide crucial updates regarding ongoing safety protocols, as well as information on support resources available to those who may be struggling in the wake of the violence. The school is prioritizing mental health and security as it seeks to restore a sense of normalcy to the campus.

As VSU continues to grapple with the aftermath of this event, the focus remains on long-term security improvements. Located approximately 25 miles south of Richmond, the university is evaluating its current access policies to prevent similar unauthorized entries in the future. The collaborative effort between campus security and local law enforcement serves as the foundation for these new safety initiatives.
