A series of ballistic missile strikes by Houthi rebels on a cargo ship in the Bab al-Mandeb strait has left six dead and several others injured.
A violent offensive in the critical Bab al-Mandeb strait has resulted in multiple fatalities, marking a significant and deadly escalation in the ongoing maritime conflict surrounding Yemen. According to officials from Yemen’s internationally recognized government, Houthi forces launched a targeted assault on a commercial cargo vessel, the Tihamah, which is owned as left the international shipping community reeling as the death toll continues to rise.
Reports from the Yemeni Transport Ministry confirm that at least six individuals were killed during the incident. Among the victims were three Pakistani nationals and one Indonesian crew member aboard the vessel. In addition to the fatalities, ten other individuals sustained injuries, including seven crew members who were caught in the initial blast. The vessel reportedly suffered extensive damage, leaving it in a precarious state as fire engulfed parts of the ship following the impact of three separate missiles.
The severity of the incident was compounded a "double-tap" attack. Yemen’s coastguard issued a statement indicating that as rescue teams arrived on the scene to assist the wounded and recover those killed in the first barrage, Houthi forces launched an additional missile directed specifically at the rescue operation site.
This secondary strike proved lethal for the emergency responders, resulting in the deaths of at least two security personnel involved in the evacuation efforts. Yemeni government, which is now urging the international community to move beyond mere diplomatic rhetoric and toward concrete, decisive action to secure the maritime corridor.
This latest act of maritime aggression occurs against a backdrop of deteriorating stability in Yemen. The long-standing, UN-brokered truce that had held since 2022 has effectively collapsed, leading to a resurgence of hostilities between the Houthi movement and the Saudi-backed government. The breakdown of the peace agreement was accelerated July that prevented the arrival of an Iranian diplomatic delegation.
Since the dissolution of the truce, the Houthis have implemented a blockade on Saudi shipping within the Red Sea and intensified their offensive capabilities. The group has launched strikes against key infrastructure, including oil facilities and Saudi airports, while simultaneously engaging in ground conflicts in areas such as Marib and the port city of al-Makha. The government reports that the group utilized a combination of drones and ballistic missiles in recent days to strike various coastal positions.
