The discovery of a stolen 18th-century Ethiopian gospel at a high-end book fair has sparked a diplomatic row over the ethics of holding colonial-era loot.
A significant piece of Ethiopian cultural heritage, known as the Gondarine Gospel, has become the focal point of a heated international dispute regarding the ethics of art dealing and the repatriation of looted artifacts. The manuscript, a rare and intricately illustrated bible dating back to the early 18th century, was recently identified in a sales catalogue for the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. The Ethiopian Heritage Authority (EHA) has formally requested the removal of the manuscript from the market, citing strong moral and ethical grounds for its return. The manuscript originally belonged to the imperial library of Emperor Tewodros II, a monarch who ruled Ethiopia until his death in 1868.
