Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli overcame a back-of-the-grid start to win the Italian Grand Prix, marking a historic moment for Italian motorsport.

Kimi Antonelli delivered a performance for the ages at the Italian Grand Prix, overcoming significant adversity to secure a victory that will be remembered for years to come. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver, hailing from the Emilia-Romagna region, started his home race from the back of the grid due to penalties incurred from power-unit changes. Despite beginning in 19th position, Antonelli showcased blistering pace and tactical brilliance, carving through the pack to claim his seventh victory of the 2026 season.

The triumph is particularly significant for the Italian motorsport faithful. Antonelli became the first domestic winner of the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti achieved the feat in 1966. As he continues to extend his lead in the drivers’ championship, the young driver is now firmly in the hunt to become Italy’s first world champion since the legendary Alberto Ascari in 1953. His ability to navigate the field under immense pressure solidified his status as the current benchmark of the sport.

The race was defined early in the proceedings. After Charles Leclerc suffered a high-speed crash into the barriers at the Parabolica on lap two, the race was halted, allowing the field to regroup. Antonelli, who had already managed to climb to 12th place before the stoppage, utilized the restart to continue his charge toward the front of the pack.

A critical turning point occurred on lap 29 during a virtual safety car period. While his teammate and title rival George Russell remained on aging hard tires, the Mercedes pit wall opted to provide Antonelli with a fresh set of medium compounds. This tactical advantage proved decisive, as it allowed the championship leader to rapidly close a 15-second gap. Following a brief struggle to find a way past his teammate, Antonelli finally made his move on lap 50, ultimately crossing the finish line 3.857 seconds ahead of Russell.

While the home crowd celebrated Antonelli’s success, the atmosphere was dampened erc, but his race ended prematurely when he lost control of his vehicle, resulting in a heavy impact with the tyre barriers. Although Leclerc emerged from his car unhurt, his early exit left the Tifosi without a Ferrari contender for the remainder of the afternoon.

Elsewhere on the grid, other teams struggled to match the pace of the Mercedes duo. Max Verstappen secured the final spot on the podium for Red Bull, finishing in third place. Further down the order, Lewis Hamilton had a challenging afternoon, crossing the line in sixth place behind the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Pierre Gasly, who started on pole position for Alpine, eventually finished seventh, rounding out a chaotic and unpredictable race weekend at the iconic Monza circuit.

With this victory, Antonelli has significantly tightened his grip on the drivers' championship standings. George Russell, despite his valiant effort to defend the lead, now sits 66 points adrift of his teammate. The gap underscores the dominance Antonelli has displayed throughout the season, characterized om the back of the grid.

As the season progresses, the rivalry between the two Mercedes drivers is expected to intensify. However, the emotional resonance of this specific win cannot be overstated. For a driver of Antonelli's youth to handle the weight of home expectations and a grid penalty with such composure suggests that the sport is witnessing the rise of a generational talent. The remaining rounds of the championship will now focus on whether any other team can find the performance gains necessary to challenge the Mercedes surge.
