Yemeni authorities report that a series of Houthi missile and drone strikes have hit residential areas in Marib, further endangering the country’s largest population of displaced people.
The Yemeni government has reported a significant surge in hostilities as Houthi forces launched a series of coordinated strikes against the city of Marib. Local provincial authorities confirmed that the city, which remains under government control, was targeted rikes, occurring on a Saturday, resulted in multiple injuries and caused substantial damage to residential properties, civilian vehicles, and local infrastructure.
The intensity of the assault continued throughout the day as officials documented further projectiles hitting the area. A fifth ballistic missile strike was reported to have caused additional civilian casualties, while a sixth missile was launched shortly thereafter. Regional authorities have condemned the aggression, labeling it a direct threat to the safety of residents and the thousands of internally displaced persons currently seeking refuge within the province.
Marib has become a focal point of the Yemeni conflict, serving as a critical sanctuary for the country's displaced population. Estimates suggest that more than two million of the five million Yemenis who have been forced from their homes due to the protracted war currently reside in Marib. This high concentration of vulnerable civilians makes the recent targeting of residential neighborhoods particularly devastating for humanitarian efforts in the region.
The Ministry of Information has characterized these actions as a dangerous escalation that exacerbates the suffering of an already traumatized population. As the conflict intensifies, the ability of aid organizations to provide essential services is increasingly compromised. The persistent threat of drone and missile strikes effectively turns densely populated camps and residential zones into active combat environments, heightening the risk of mass casualties and further displacement.
While the situation in Marib remains critical, the broader conflict has seen a simultaneous rise in violence across other regions of Yemen. Government forces reported successful defensive operations along the Maqbanah front, located west of Taiz. According to military sources, drone strikes conducted ey field commanders, while also inflicting a significant number of injuries on rebel forces.
Additional tactical successes were reported in Jabal al-Zuhayb, where a government strike successfully neutralized a Houthi military vehicle and killed several combatants. These clashes highlight the volatile nature of the current landscape, as both sides engage in aggressive maneuvers that have rapidly undermined the relative stability that existed in the country over the past few years.
The current spike in violence represents a marked departure from the relative calm that had characterized Yemen since the implementation of a United Nations-brokered truce in April 2022. The recent attacks in Marib follow a particularly lethal incident in early August, where missile and drone strikes targeted military camps in both Marib and Hadramout, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 government soldiers. This event marked the deadliest single episode in the conflict in recent years.
