The Jacksonville Jaguars rolled to a 33-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football, underlining their status as one of the NFL’s best teams — while the Ravens’ season unravelled further with Lamar Jackson officially placed on injured reserve.

Key Points

  • Trevor Lawrence completed 16 of 26 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown as Jacksonville improved to 6-2 and kept command of the AFC South.
  • The Ravens fell to 4-5, their fourth straight defeat, with undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano starting at quarterback.
  • Baltimore placed Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley on injured reserve on Thursday, meaning both will miss at least the next four games.
  • The Jaguars have now allowed just 17 points in their last two games and lead the NFL with a +108 point differential.

Jacksonville came out swinging, scoring a touchdown on a seven-play, 77-yard opening drive, and never looked back. Lawrence’s 50-yard touchdown pass to Parker Washington was the team’s longest scoring pass of the season, and the Jaguars scored the next 26 points after Jake Moody’s 53-yard field goal had briefly pulled Baltimore within 7-3 in the first quarter.

A Ravens offence without its star

The contrast between the two teams was starkest at quarterback. With Jackson and Huntley both sidelined, Fagnano made his first NFL start and finished 10 of 18 for just 60 yards and two interceptions, a passer rating of 22.7. Baltimore managed only 55 net passing yards, and all three of its turnovers came after half-time.

The numbers tell the story of Jackson’s value. Over their past eight quarters, the Ravens have totalled 346 yards of offence; over their first three games of the season, they averaged 398.7 yards per game. Baltimore began the season 4-1 and has now lost four in a row. Jackson, the two-time MVP, is expected to undergo surgery on his injured right thumb, and the Ravens have traded for Jacoby Brissett as a stopgap.

Baltimore’s only touchdown came on Justice Hill’s 65-yard run with the team already trailing 33-3. Cam Little kicked three field goals for Jacksonville, and the Jaguars’ defence, which allowed just 17 combined points across wins over Indianapolis and Baltimore, is now a major reason the team sits second in the NFL in points scored with 229.

What happens next

The Jaguars get a short break before travelling to face the Tennessee Titans next week, while the Ravens host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 10. The NFL trade deadline arrives on Tuesday, November 10, and several teams — Baltimore among them — face difficult decisions about their rosters. In other sports news this week, Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football after 23 years with Portugal.
