A former OpenAI engineer faces charges for allegedly planting a recording device with help from the Saudi government.

Prosecutors claim a former OpenAI engineer acted with help from the Saudi government. Abdulrahman Alfozan allegedly placed a secret recording device inside an office meeting room.

Also, court documents reveal Alfozan maintained frequent contact with a Saudi royal family member. Investigators believe this shows he had significant backing from his home country.

Next, OpenAI staff discovered the device on September 30. Someone plugged the recorder into a television and hid it with toilet paper.

Then, the company placed a security camera in the room. Footage from October 5 captured Alfozan looking behind the television set where the device sat.

After that, the FBI arrested the 35-year-old engineer on October 9. OpenAI immediately ended his employment contract following the discovery.

Meanwhile, officials warn that this conduct threatens United States national security. Government leaders often met with tech executives in that specific room.

Furthermore, Alfozan planned to leave the country shortly after his arrest. He held a one-way ticket to Riyadh for himself and his family.

As a result, his wife and child traveled to Qatar the day after his arrest. A Saudi military official paid for their one-way business class flights.

Still, Alfozan's defense team requested his release on bail. A federal judge denied this request, citing a high risk that he would flee.

Finally, the court ruled that Alfozan must remain in jail before his trial. He faces up to five years in prison if a jury finds him guilty.
