A collapse at an illegal gold mine in Colombia killed fourteen workers. Rescue teams believe more people remain missing in the remote area.

A tragic accident occurred at an illegal gold mine in southwestern Colombia. Authorities confirmed that fourteen people died during the collapse.

Additionally, seven other workers suffered injuries in the incident. The disaster happened in the rural Chambero sector of Santa Barbara de Iscuande.

Next, search and rescue teams finished their work at the site. Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar shared this update on Monday.

However, officials remain concerned about other potential victims. Disaster response leader Jorge Tovar Castillo noted that twelve to fifteen miners are still missing.

Meanwhile, local leaders are managing the emergency response efforts. They face significant challenges because communication in the area is very difficult.

Also, the location is extremely remote and hard to reach. Dense rainforest surrounds the site, meaning people can only travel there by boat or small plane.

Furthermore, Governor Escobar described the site as an informal mine. He expressed deep sadness regarding this painful tragedy in his region.

As a result, officials are now focused on supporting the grieving families. They want to ensure they provide a quick response to those affected.

Still, this is not an isolated event for the region. Unregulated mining operations are common across rural parts of Colombia.

Finally, these sites often lack basic safety tools or proper infrastructure. This lack of oversight leads to frequent and deadly accidents for workers.

For example, a similar mining collapse took place in the municipality of Policarpa just this past August. That tragic event claimed the lives of thirteen people.
