Ethiopian government forces have expanded their control in the Tigray region. Meanwhile, reports suggest Eritrean troops are retreating toward the border.
Ethiopian government forces and their allies now control more territory in the Tigray region. These troops recently entered the historic city of Aksum. Fighting continues throughout this northern area.
Meanwhile, the pro-government Tigray Peace Force claims that Eritrean soldiers are retreating. A spokesperson says these foreign troops suffered heavy losses during recent battles.
However, Eritrea denies these reports entirely. Their information minister calls the claims false. Independent observers cannot verify the true number of casualties at this time.
Also, conflict monitors report that Ethiopian troops entered Aksum while rival fighters stayed in nearby mountains. These monitors also saw Eritrean forces withdrawing across the border through the town of Zalambessa.
Residents in Zalambessa report no active fighting right now. Still, the town lacks electricity and water. People there feel trapped and live in constant fear.
Next, reports show Ethiopian tanks moving toward the border. This movement causes international worry about a new war between the two nations. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of helping rebel groups.
Furthermore, Addis Ababa claims Sudan and Egypt also support these rebels. All three countries deny any involvement in the Ethiopian conflict. Eritrea recently ended diplomatic ties with the Ethiopian government.
After that, the Tigray Peace Force continued its campaign against rebel fighters. Ethiopian forces recently took control of the capital city, Mekelle. They also secured the towns of Adwa and Adigrat.
Finally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He urged both sides to lower tensions immediately. He warned that the region cannot handle more violence.
