A former Mexican prosecutor faces treason charges for allegedly allowing unauthorized US agents to participate in a local drug raid.
Mexican federal prosecutors recently charged a former state official with treason. César Jáuregui Moreno allegedly allowed United States agents to join a drug lab raid without permission.
Next, authorities investigated the matter after a fatal car crash. Two American agents and two Mexican officers died in that accident.
Also, the crash occurred in April in the state of Chihuahua. Reports suggest the Americans worked for the CIA during the operation.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos claims Jáuregui broke the law. She states he permitted foreign agents to perform tasks meant only for Mexican officials.
However, the former prosecutor denies these serious claims. He insists he did not authorize or oversee the presence of US agents.
After that, police arrested Jáuregui over the weekend. A court will now decide if there is enough evidence to move forward.
Then, the court scheduled a hearing for this Saturday. Jáuregui also faces separate charges in Chihuahua involving the abuse of public office.
As a result, the case highlights tensions regarding foreign involvement. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum maintains that foreign officials require federal clearance to work locally.
Still, the President rejects US-led drug operations on Mexican soil. She insists that the country must protect its own national sovereignty.
Finally, Jáuregui previously claimed the Americans were merely training staff. He stated this during a press conference held shortly after the tragic crash.
