Health officials warned Pretoria residents to avoid tap water after over 400 people fell ill from contamination.

Officials in South Africa have issued a stern warning to residents near Pretoria. They advise people to stop drinking or cooking with tap water immediately. This follows a sudden spike in illnesses across the region.

More than 400 people recently fell sick after consuming local water. Most of those affected are young children under four years old. Patients arrived at local hospitals with severe stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Also, laboratory testing confirmed the presence of dangerous bacteria. Experts found E. coli, norovirus, and other harmful pathogens in the supply. These substances cause serious stomach issues for those who drink the water.

Meanwhile, the outbreak occurred over a two-week period in October. Officials identified cases in about five different townships. They linked the sickness to a local water treatment facility.

However, investigators found that local authorities failed to warn the public early enough. This delay left many families exposed to the contaminated supply. The water is now officially declared unfit for human consumption.

Next, the government dispatched water tankers to help the affected communities. These trucks provide clean, safe drinking water to residents in need. Officials urge people to use tap water only for flushing toilets.

Furthermore, residents should throw away any previously stored water. They must also disinfect all containers using household bleach. This step helps prevent further cases of sickness in the area.

Finally, this region has struggled with water safety for many years. A deadly cholera outbreak killed 29 people in 2023. Officials continue to investigate the latest source of contamination to prevent future health crises.
