NASA satellite imagery captures the vibrant autumn colors and unique geography of Poland's Bieszczady National Park.

Cooler air and shorter days arrive in the Carpathian Mountains of Poland. Brown bears roam the hills to gain weight for their winter hibernation. Meanwhile, the local forests begin a beautiful seasonal change.

Beech trees and other deciduous plants turn bright red and gold. The Landsat 9 satellite captured this colorful scene on October 8, 2026. The image shows Bieszczady National Park during the peak of autumn.

European beech trees cover most of these forests. Sycamore maples also add to the vibrant fall display. The trees stop making chlorophyll as sunlight fades and temperatures drop.

Without chlorophyll, the green color of the leaves vanishes. Other pigments like yellow and red become visible to the eye. This process creates the stunning patterns seen from space.

Also, the European beech has a long history in this region. These trees survived the ice ages in small, protected pockets. They spread across Europe after the glaciers retreated long ago.

Today, parts of this park belong to a special UNESCO network. This group protects ancient beech forests across 18 different countries. These areas serve as vital reminders of the continent's past.

Next, the forests stop at higher elevations near 1,200 meters. Open grasslands called polonina appear above the tree line. These areas contain shrubs like rowan and mountain ash.

These meadows look tan instead of green during the autumn months. They stretch along the ridge tops near the town of Smerek. The landscape provides a unique contrast to the dense forests below.

Finally, the mountains host many impressive wild animals. European bison returned to these hills in the 1960s after facing extinction. Hundreds of these large animals now thrive in the park.

In addition, brown bears and Eurasian lynx live in these woods. These creatures find plenty of food in the protected environment. The region remains a sanctuary for diverse wildlife species.
