Pope Leo returned home to the Vatican on Saturday after a successful surgery to remove a portion of his lung.

Pope Leo left the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome this Saturday. He spent four days there recovering from lung cancer surgery.

Also, the Pope told onlookers he feels much better. He waved to the crowd as he departed the medical center.

Doctors performed the surgery last Tuesday. They removed the bottom part of his right lung during the procedure.

Next, medical tests confirmed a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. This represents the most common form of lung cancer today.

Meanwhile, the Pope showed signs of steady improvement. He held meetings with his aides and even celebrated mass while hospitalized.

Additionally, Pope Leo spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also thanked the hospital staff for their hard work.

Then, the Pope plans to resume his official duties this Sunday. He will lead the traditional Angelus blessing for the public.

After that, he must prepare for a busy schedule. He has a major trip to Latin America planned for mid-November.

Finally, the trip requires many flights and helicopter rides. He has about three weeks left to finish his recovery.

As a result, the Vatican hopes he remains strong. Pope Leo is originally from Chicago but has deep ties to South America.
