Trump says the US Navy blockade has stopped all Iranian ships from crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says the war on Iran has already cost Europeans more than 100 billion euros ($112bn), with ordinary people bearing the economic burden.
“Those of us who raised our voices against the war were right when we said NO to war,” he wrote on X accompanying a video statement.
“We knew ordinary people would end up paying the bill.”
Speaking at a news conference following the European Council summit in Brussels on Friday, Sanchez said opponents of the war had been proved right “not only from the standpoint of international law and respect for human rights, but also because of the economic and social consequences our fellow citizens are once again experiencing”.
“Ultimately, ordinary people end up paying for it, and unfortunately that is already being felt,” he said.
Sanchez said Spain’s parliament had approved a package worth more than 12 billion euros ($13.4bn) “to protect the affected sectors and also to protect citizens who use their cars”.
“What matters now is resolving this disaster as soon as possible,” he said.
The Saudi-led coalition says it has destroyed two Houthi ballistic missile launchers in Yemen’s northern Saada governorate.
The announcement came after Houthi-run Al Masirah TV reported two Saudi air strikes east of Saada city.
