China has taken a more confrontational diplomatic stance, with representatives stating that they oppose what they describe as extraterritorial jurisdiction. Beijing maintains that its trade relationships are built on mutual benefit and should not be subject to external interference. However, China possesses a strategic advantage that India lacks: a portion of its Russian oil imports is delivered via overland pipelines, rendering those specific supply chains immune to the maritime-focused sanctions and disruption tactics that Washington intends to employ against the broader Russian energy network.
The global oil market is currently operating under extreme pressure, making the potential enforcement of these US tariffs a matter of significant concern for international stability. Recent geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the resulting disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz, have already restricted global supply routes. With approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply historically passing through this waterway, any further restriction on Russian energy could exacerbate an already tight market.
