Hundreds of Ukrainians escaped the occupied city of Oleshky after a ceasefire allowed them to flee to safety.

Viacheslav and his wife Olha recently escaped the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. They arrived in northern Ukraine after years of living under occupation. The couple described their experience as living in hell. They traveled with their children and their pet dog.

Also, hundreds of other residents joined them on this journey. They crossed into Ukraine through Belarus on Saturday. Many people reunited with family members they had not seen for years. The city of Oleshky has remained under Russian control since early 2022.

Next, the city sits between the Dnipro River and Russian forces. Residents faced constant danger from shelling and drone attacks. Olha and Viacheslav feared escaping because of mined roads. They struggled to find enough food to survive.

Meanwhile, some residents walked through minefields to find basic supplies. Many people suffered injuries or died during these dangerous trips. Others ate garden weeds just to stay alive. The situation became impossible for those remaining in the city.

However, a recent humanitarian ceasefire provided a path to safety. This brief period of peace allowed people to leave the area. Authorities organized a convoy of buses to move the civilians. These vehicles transported hundreds of people to a facility in Chernihiv.

After that, family members greeted the arrivals with tears and hugs. One man named Mykhailo Palii reunited with his daughters on the tarmac. He previously hid the true dangers of the city from them. He did not want his children to worry about missile strikes.

Still, other survivors had lost their homes years ago. Tetiana and Volodymyr lived in an abandoned house after theirs burned down. They felt relieved to finally leave the dangerous environment. They have no regrets about leaving their former lives behind.

Finally, the survivors now face the challenge of rebuilding. Some people need to find new jobs to support their families. Many rely on acquaintances for temporary housing. These resilient people believe they can survive anything after escaping such harsh conditions.
