The son of a convicted Kenyan cult leader saved his siblings from forced starvation. The cult leader was recently found guilty of 191 murders.
The eldest son of a convicted Kenyan cult leader recently rescued his younger siblings from harm. Dan Mackenzie, age 27, reported his own family to the police. He discovered his siblings were still being forced to fast by their grandmother.
Also, the police acted quickly on his report. They rescued eight children from the grandmother's home. These children now stay at a safe rescue center.
Meanwhile, a court found the father, Paul Mackenzie, guilty of 191 murders. The cult leader ordered his followers to starve themselves and their children. He told them this act would help them meet Jesus.
Furthermore, the judge revealed the cult’s dark practices. Followers believed the leader was the mouthpiece of Jesus. They even forced people to fast through physical violence.
After that, the group treated deaths as celebrations. They called burials in the forest "weddings." They claimed victims were wedded to Jesus.
Next, Dan Mackenzie shared his own painful history. He says his father forced him to fast for a week at age 12. His father also banned modern medicine and school.
Consequently, Dan left school at age seven. He now works as a taxi driver in Malindi. He uses his earnings to support his younger siblings.
Still, some locals remain angry with him because of his father’s crimes. Others accept him because he left the cult. He hopes the court verdict brings peace to the victims' families.
Later, the court will deliver the final sentence on November 6. The cult leader still faces other charges in court. These include terrorism and denying children an education.
Finally, authorities continue to process the tragedy. They discovered over 400 bodies in Shakahola forest in 2023. Many families still seek answers about their lost loved ones.
