A rare Nanotyrannus fossil nicknamed Jodi is hitting the auction block in New York with a price tag of up to $9 million.

A rare dinosaur skeleton known as Jodi is heading to auction in New York. Sotheby’s expects the fossil to sell for at least $6 million. Experts believe the price could reach as high as $9 million.

Next, researchers recently identified this specimen as a Nanotyrannus. Scientists previously thought it was a young Tyrannosaurus rex. New studies confirm it belongs to its own unique genus.

Also, the skeleton stands about 10 feet tall. It contains 191 fossil bones and a nearly complete skull. Experts call it an excellent example for public display.

Then, rancher Jodi Pierson found the bones on her property in Montana. Commercial excavator Clayton Phipps later removed the fossil from the ground. It comes from the famous Hall Creek Formation site.

Meanwhile, the Nanotyrannus lived alongside the T. rex about 67 million years ago. It appears much smaller and more slender than its famous relative. It also features sharp, blade-like teeth for eating meat.

After that, the sale sparked a debate among scientists regarding private ownership. Some experts worry that wealthy collectors will hide these items away. They believe fossils belong in public museums for everyone to study.

However, other experts argue that private sales help fund difficult excavation work. They note that many privately owned fossils eventually reach museums. They do not necessarily disappear from public view forever.

Finally, this auction highlights a growing trend in the fossil market. High prices make it difficult for universities to compete for specimens. Scientists hope these rare remains continue to inspire the public.
