A teacher who survived an Oregon school shooting shared how she played dead to avoid further gunfire. She also clarified the events of that day.
A 54-year-old teacher recently shared her terrifying experience during an Oregon elementary school shooting. Becky Drury served as a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School.
Next, she explained how she tried to close her classroom door during the incident. The gunman immediately shot her, and she collapsed onto the floor.
After that, she chose to play dead to stay alive. She hoped the attacker would not fire at her again.
Meanwhile, the shooter killed three students and one teacher. A parent at the school eventually stopped the gunman by shooting him.
Also, Drury described the severe injuries she suffered that day. A bullet nearly severed her left hand, and her other arm sustained heavy damage.
Because of these wounds, she could not protect her students. She remained on the floor and waited for the violence to end.
However, reports about her actions had been confusing. Some people thought she shielded a student, but she explained she was wounded first.
Then, she clarified that she never had the chance to act. The gunman wounded her before she could help anyone.
Still, other staff members showed great bravery. One teacher threw her phone at the attacker to try and stop him.
Finally, a parent followed the suspect into the building. This father shot the 16-year-old attacker to end the threat.
Now, the community continues to mourn the young victims. Drury expressed that her heart breaks for everyone involved in this tragedy.
As a result, investigators are still working to find a motive. They confirmed the suspect was a former student at the school.
