A nurse died and another worker suffered serious injuries in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Local youths attacked them during an Ebola response mission. The attackers falsely accused the health workers of spreading the virus through water sources.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization condemned this act of violence. The agency stated that healthcare workers deserve safety and dignity while performing their duties.

Also, Uganda reacted to the regional crisis by banning non-essential travel to and from the Congo. Returning citizens must now complete a 21-day quarantine period.

Next, the Ebola outbreak continues to cause significant harm in the region. Nearly 10,000 people have caught the virus since May. Sadly, the death toll has climbed above 4,800.

Still, this incident is not the first attack on health staff in the region. Last month, attackers killed a politician promoting safety measures. Red Cross volunteers also faced violence during previous months.

After that, Ebola cases appeared in Nigeria and Kenya. A patient in Nigeria recently traveled to Switzerland for advanced medical care. Health officials are now tracking her movements to find the source of the infection.

Furthermore, Uganda is tightening border security to prevent the virus from entering the country. Only essential workers like truck drivers may cross the border. These travelers must undergo strict health screenings.

Finally, the Ugandan government remains alert because of its shared border with the Congo. Officials emphasize that constant vigilance is necessary to protect their citizens. Scientists continue to work on vaccines and treatments for this rare Ebola strain.
