Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, marking the first global Olympic event in Russia since the invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships. This marks the first time an Olympic federation has held a global event in Russia since 2022. The country began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine during that year.

Also, the International Weightlifting Federation revealed this decision on Sunday. They previously allowed Russian athletes to return to their events four months ago. The group also selected Ahmedabad, India, to host the 2029 senior championships.

Next, the International Olympic Committee previously suspended the Russian Olympic Committee. That move occurred after the invasion of Ukraine began. However, the committee recently lifted that suspension on a provisional basis.

Meanwhile, no other Olympic sports federation has held a world championship in Russia since the war started. Organizations moved events like the 2025 World Aquatics Championships away from Russian cities. Moscow has not hosted a weightlifting world championship since 1983.

After that, the Russian Weightlifting Federation praised the decision. President Aleksandr Vinokurov thanked the international group for their trust. He noted that Moscow has modern infrastructure and experience with major sports events.

Still, the event will serve as a qualifier for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane. The International Olympic Committee maintains that it will not organize events inside Russia. They also will not invite Russian state officials to their own gatherings.

Furthermore, the International Olympic Committee has not decided on the use of Russian flags or anthems. Some Russian athletes competed as neutrals in recent Olympic Games. Ukraine has challenged the decision to lift the suspension at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Finally, the International Paralympic Committee previously ended Russia's sports exile. That group allowed Russian athletes to compete under their national flag at recent games. The world of sports continues to monitor these complex international developments closely.
