Ethiopia has acquired 12 Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets to boost its defense capabilities. The nation also plans to purchase advanced S-400 air defense systems.

Ethiopia recently received 12 Su-35 fighter jets from Russia. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called this purchase a major milestone for national defense.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister visited Moscow for the Russia-Africa summit. He confirmed that Ethiopia also plans to buy four S-400 air defense systems.

Next, Abiy explained that these deals started several years ago. He stated that the new equipment helps protect Ethiopia from external threats.

Also, the Prime Minister described Russian President Vladimir Putin as a close friend. He noted that Ethiopia is the first sub-Saharan nation to own this technology.

Furthermore, Abiy believes this military growth is vital for survival. He claims that well-prepared nations are much harder to challenge or defeat.

Then, military analyst Qalaab Segatu shared his thoughts on the purchase. He believes these jets show Ethiopia is preparing for potential wars with other countries.

Additionally, the Su-35 jets provide strong air-to-air and air-to-ground combat abilities. They can detect incoming missiles from up to 200 kilometers away.

After that, experts noted that these tools protect critical sites. They help secure major cities and the Renaissance Dam from potential attacks.

Still, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of other military tools. He said drones remain a key part of the country’s defense strategy.

Finally, these acquisitions arrive during ongoing tensions in northern Tigray. Ethiopia continues to face security challenges while managing its relationship with neighboring Eritrea.
