A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Tibet, causing 16 deaths and significant damage. Rescuers are working in difficult conditions to help survivors.
A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake recently struck a mountainous region in Tibet. Chinese state media reports at least 16 deaths and many injuries. The quake hit Baqên County in the Nagqu area on Thursday night.
Also, the emergency bureau confirms 65 people suffered injuries during the event. Authorities report that 11 of these victims have severe health issues. Officials immediately declared an emergency to assist the victims.
Next, rescue teams arrived to help those in the impacted zone. The quake caused 339 homes to collapse entirely. Large rockfalls blocked several roads and slowed down the relief efforts.
Meanwhile, the disaster cut off electricity to many homes in the region. Workers managed to restore some power by Friday morning. However, over 12,400 people had to leave their damaged properties.
Then, the United States Geological Survey recorded seven smaller tremors near the epicenter. These shallow quakes often cause more damage than deeper ones. Experts say the area remains very dangerous.
After that, survivors shared stories of their terrifying experiences. One resident described the shaking as feeling like hundreds of animals running past. Many people stayed outside in freezing weather to avoid trapped buildings.
Still, more than 400 aftershocks occurred following the main earthquake. Premier Li Qiang ordered urgent rescue operations for the high-altitude region. He emphasized the need for proper medical care for all survivors.
Furthermore, the government allocated 50 million yuan for disaster relief. The Ministry of Emergency Management sent a special team to lead the work. Military drones are currently surveying the damage from the air.
