New IMF data shows Bangladesh's per capita GDP exceeding India's this year, though experts note significant differences in their economic structures.
The International Monetary Fund recently released a new economic report. It projects that Bangladesh will have a higher per capita GDP than India this year. This measurement divides a country's total economic output by its population size.
Also, Bangladesh expects a per capita GDP of $2,886 in 2026. India sits at $2,749 for the same period. Bangladesh has seen significant economic growth over the last twenty years.
Then, experts point to several key reasons for this success. The country relies heavily on a massive $38 billion garment industry. Increased female participation in the workforce and money sent home by workers also help.
However, the total Indian economy remains much larger than its neighbor. India's GDP is nearly eight times the size of Bangladesh's economy. India also maintains a much larger industrial and technology base.
Meanwhile, economists warn that these numbers do not tell the whole story. India holds a higher buying capacity when adjusted for local costs and prices. This metric is known as purchasing power parity.
As a result, India currently faces lower inflation rates than Bangladesh. Bangladesh struggles with high inflation and a slower overall growth rate of 3.6 percent. India expects to grow by 7 percent this year.
Still, recent global conflicts have impacted both nations differently. Bangladesh imports almost all of its oil and gas from the Middle East. Shipping disruptions have hurt its crucial garment exports significantly.
Next, long-term projections show the gap may shift again by 2029. India's economy is expected to pull ahead as its diverse services sector expands. Both nations continue to face challenges regarding wealth inequality.
Finally, experts view Bangladesh as a notable economic success story in South Asia. Consistent growth and manufacturing gains define its progress. Both countries must now manage rising costs and global market pressures carefully.
