Governor Mike Dunleavy ordered a probe into claims that a Democratic campaign tried to confuse voters by recruiting a candidate with a similar name.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy recently ordered an official investigation into election practices. He wants to know if a scheme exists to manipulate state voting results. The governor acted after a recent news report surfaced about the Democratic campaign.
Next, the report claims the team of Mary Peltola tried to recruit a specific candidate. This person shares a name with her opponent, Senator Dan Sullivan. Republicans believe this tactic aims to confuse Alaska voters during the election.
Meanwhile, the Peltola campaign denies any wrongdoing in this matter. They claim they never encouraged the second Dan Sullivan to enter the race. The second candidate is a retired teacher living in a small village.
Also, the teacher claims he is running his campaign in good faith. He denies having any links to the Democratic team. He previously voted for Peltola but says he is a moderate Republican today.
However, Senator Dan Sullivan calls the situation a major scandal. He wants the Democratic team to explain their actions clearly. Senator Lisa Murkowski also attacked the Democrats for their alleged pattern of lies.
As a result, Governor Dunleavy directed the Department of Public Safety to look into the matter. He wants to see if anyone broke Alaska state laws. The state will decide if criminal or civil charges are necessary.
Still, the Alaska Supreme Court previously rejected efforts to remove the teacher from the ballot. The ballot will list both men to help voters distinguish between them. One is the incumbent senator and the other is a retired educator.
Finally, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee denied all involvement in this plan. They stated they have no connection to any scheme against the senator. The upcoming midterm election results remain very important for the control of Congress.
