Mukesh Ambani's Jio Platforms recently launched a successful IPO. The firm now ranks as India's second most valuable company.

Mukesh Ambani recently celebrated a major business milestone in Mumbai. His company, Jio Platforms, launched a successful initial public offering (IPO). The firm raised $3.2 billion during its debut on the stock market.

Next, the company shares climbed by 21 percent on Wednesday. This growth valued the business at $131.5 billion. It now ranks as India's second most valuable company. Only Reliance Industries, its parent firm, holds a higher value.

Also, Jio serves over 530 million customers today. The company counts tech giants like Meta and Google as key partners. These firms invested billions into the business back in 2020.

Then, Jio changed the Indian telecom market forever in 2016. Ambani offered free data for several months to attract users. This strategy helped the firm gain 100 million subscribers in just 170 days.

However, this rapid growth came with high costs. Jio spent nearly $22.5 billion on infrastructure and new technology. The company accepted early losses to build a massive customer base.

As a result, many competitors struggled to keep up with these low prices. Seven out of ten existing operators eventually left the market. Some firms faced bankruptcy, while others chose to merge with larger companies.

Meanwhile, the market became highly concentrated. Today, only three major operators control over 92 percent of the sector. Consumers enjoyed cheap prices initially, but costs have risen in recent years.

Furthermore, Jio now plans to expand into space-based internet services. This move could put the company in direct competition with Elon Musk’s Starlink. Musk has criticized the current market for favoring local monopolies.

Finally, the Ambani family continues to influence many parts of Indian life. Their business empire spans from food and fuel to digital services. Reliance insists it welcomes fair competition from both local and global firms.
