A US Marine faces murder and robbery charges in Japan after the death of a 39-year-old woman in Okinawa.

A US Marine faces murder and robbery charges in Japan. Prosecutors indicted 20-year-old Devin Jacob Ballard this month.

He served at the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. Authorities arrested him for the death of 39-year-old Anna Yagi.

Next, the indictment claims Ballard strangled Yagi with a phone cord. He allegedly stole her wallet and backpack afterward.

However, Ballard initially denied these claims. Investigators later noted he made comments suggesting he was involved in the crime.

Also, security cameras captured a man entering a Naha hotel with Yagi. The footage shows him leaving alone with her items.

Meanwhile, the victim's death sparked significant public outrage. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the act brutal and heinous.

As a result, the Marine Corps pledged to help Japanese officials. They expressed condolences to the family of the victim.

Still, this case highlights ongoing tensions in Okinawa. The region hosts about 55,000 US troops, the highest number in Japan.

Later, local leaders criticized the lack of military discipline. Governor Genta Koja demanded the US take steps to stop such crimes.

For example, protesters gathered in Tokyo and Naha to express anger. Many citizens used social media to demand justice for Yagi.

Finally, this case follows several other recent crimes. US service members faced sexual assault charges in Okinawa throughout 2024 and 2025.
