A student-led movement won a majority in Serbia's parliament, ending Aleksandar Vucic's long time in power.

A youth-led opposition group recently won Serbia’s snap parliamentary election. This victory ends the long rule of former President Aleksandar Vucic. The results follow years of protests across the country.

These protests began after a deadly railway station collapse in Novi Sad in 2024. Sixteen people died in that tragedy. Citizens soon demanded accountability for corruption and weakened democratic institutions.

Also, the Student List campaigned on several key promises. They pledged to fight crime and improve the economy. They also want to boost education and support media freedom.

The Republic Election Commission reports that the Student List received over 52 percent of the vote. Vucic’s party secured about 39 percent. Voter turnout reached a 30-year high at nearly 69 percent.

Next, the new group will hold a majority in the 250-seat parliament. They expect to control 140 seats. This allows them to form a government without needing coalition partners.

Meanwhile, the party has not officially named a prime minister. They emphasize collective leadership instead of individual power. Many people believe professor Ilija Srdanovic will lead the new government.

After that, the focus shifts to forming the cabinet. Parliament must meet within 30 days of the final results. The government needs to be established within 90 days after that.

Still, the country faces an upcoming presidential race. Vucic resigned from his post in September. Ana Brnabic currently serves as the temporary president.

Finally, the nation must hold a presidential election by December 27. Citizens will choose the new leader directly. This election marks a major turning point for Serbian politics.
