A Pakistani court sentenced two prominent human rights lawyers to 10 years in prison over an alleged security breach during a cricket tour.

A Pakistani court sentenced lawyers Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha to 10 years in prison. An anti-terrorism judge issued the ruling regarding a 2024 security incident.

Meanwhile, the authorities accused the couple of removing road barriers. This event occurred during a cricket tour in Islamabad. The pair denied these claims.

Next, the court applied the Anti-Terrorism Act to the case. The lawyers also received extra time for obstructing public servants. The sentences will occur at the same time.

Also, the judge ordered each person to pay a fine. The amount equals 200,000 Pakistani Rupees for each individual. Both lawyers remain held in Adiala Jail.

As a result, the couple described themselves as prisoners of conscience. They claimed the state is punishing them for their activism. They believe they are examples meant to silence other critics.

However, Amnesty International strongly criticized the legal proceedings. The organization stated the couple did not receive a fair trial. They believe the state is targeting the lawyers for their human rights work.

Then, the group expressed concerns about the trial location. Officials held the hearings inside the prison. The lawyers stood behind a cage during these sessions.

Finally, the pair has faced many legal challenges recently. They were previously sentenced for social media posts about the military. The Supreme Court suspended those sentences before police arrested them again.

The couple represents activists and journalists in Pakistan. They work for marginalized communities facing enforced disappearances. Their case continues to draw international concern regarding human rights.
