A former OpenAI engineer faces charges for planting a recording device. Prosecutors claim he received support from the Saudi government to flee the U.S.

Prosecutors claim a former OpenAI employee received significant help from the Saudi government. They allege 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan planted a secret recording device in an office meeting room.

Also, court documents reveal Alfozan stayed in regular contact with a member of the Saudi royal family. Officials believe he poses a serious flight risk to avoid his upcoming trial.

Next, the investigation shows the engineer worked at the company for about one year. OpenAI staff found the hidden audio device on September 30. Someone had attached it to a television and covered it with toilet paper.

Then, the tech company installed a camera to monitor the room. Footage from October 5 shows Alfozan looking behind the television set. The FBI arrested him shortly after on October 9.

Meanwhile, prosecutors argue the case involves national security concerns. Important government officials met with OpenAI executives in that specific room during the period the device was active.

After that, the court filing noted that Alfozan planned to leave the country. He had a one-way ticket to Riyadh scheduled three days after his arrest.

Furthermore, the suspect's family left the United States immediately after his capture. A Saudi military official paid for their one-way business class flights to Qatar.

Still, the defendant's wife told investigators they intended to move back to Saudi Arabia permanently. Because of this, officials believe he has no reason to stay for his legal proceedings.

Finally, the FBI continues to investigate these serious allegations. If a court finds him guilty, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison and a large fine.
