A former OpenAI engineer faces charges for planting a recording device. Prosecutors claim he has significant backing from the Saudi government.

Prosecutors accuse a former OpenAI employee of planting a secret recording device. The suspect is a Saudi national named Abdulrahman Alfozan.

Also, court documents suggest he had strong support from the Saudi government. Prosecutors claim he spoke often with a member of the royal family.

Next, the company found the recorder on September 30. Someone hid it behind a television in a meeting room using toilet paper.

After that, investigators set up a camera in the room. This camera caught Alfozan looking behind the television on October 5.

Meanwhile, the FBI arrested the 35-year-old engineer on October 9. OpenAI immediately ended his employment contract following the discovery.

However, officials worry about national security risks. Important government leaders held meetings in that specific room during the incident.

Then, new evidence showed Alfozan planned to leave the country. He had a one-way flight booked to Riyadh for his family.

As a result, his wife and child flew to Qatar shortly after his arrest. A Saudi military official paid for these expensive business class tickets.

Still, Alfozan requested release on bail during a recent hearing. A judge denied this request because he poses a significant flight risk.

Finally, the court held him without bail pending his trial. He faces up to five years in prison if a jury finds him guilty.
