A former OpenAI engineer faces charges for planting a secret recording device. Prosecutors allege he received significant support from the Saudi government.
A former OpenAI engineer faces serious charges after allegedly hiding a recording device in a company office. Prosecutors claim Abdulrahman Alfozan received significant backing from the Saudi government during his actions.
Also, court documents reveal Alfozan communicated often with a member of the Saudi royal family. This 35-year-old engineer worked at the AI firm for about one year before his arrest.
Next, OpenAI staff found the device on September 30. Someone plugged the recorder into a television and hid it with toilet paper. The company then installed a camera in that meeting room.
Then, footage showed Alfozan checking behind the television on October 5. The FBI arrested the engineer four days later. OpenAI immediately ended his employment contract following these events.
However, officials believe this incident threatens United States national security. Important government leaders often held meetings in that specific room during that time. The device potentially captured sensitive information.
Meanwhile, the suspect planned to leave the country shortly after his arrest. He booked a one-way flight from San Francisco to Saudi Arabia for his family. He intended to join them later.
After that, the FBI interviewed the suspect's wife. She admitted that she and her children were moving back to Saudi Arabia permanently. She noted her husband planned to follow them soon.
As a result, a Saudi military official paid for the family's one-way business class tickets to Qatar. This evidence suggests the defendant has few reasons to remain in the United States.
Still, a judge denied bail for the accused man on Monday. Judge Alex Tse ruled that Alfozan poses a significant flight risk. The court will keep him in custody until his trial.
Finally, the FBI continues to investigate the case. Alfozan faces up to five years in prison and a large fine if convicted. The Saudi government has not yet commented on the situation.
