Prosecutors claim a former OpenAI engineer had support from the Saudi government while allegedly planting a recording device in a company office.
A former OpenAI engineer faces serious charges after allegedly planting a recording device. Prosecutors claim Abdulrahman Alfozan received significant support from the Saudi government.
Moreover, court documents reveal Alfozan communicated frequently with a Saudi royal family member. Investigators believe this connection poses a major security threat to the United States.
The incident began when OpenAI staff found a recorder in a meeting room on September 30. Someone hid the device behind a television using toilet paper.
Next, the company installed a camera to monitor the room. On October 5, the camera captured Alfozan checking the area behind the same television.
After that, the FBI arrested the 35-year-old engineer on October 9. OpenAI immediately ended his employment contract following the discovery of the device.
Meanwhile, the court filing suggests the suspect planned to leave the country. He had a one-way flight booked to Riyadh scheduled for three days after his arrest.
Also, his wife told agents they intended to move back to Saudi Arabia permanently. She noted that her American visa was about to expire.
Following his arrest, his wife and child flew to Qatar. A Saudi military official reportedly paid for their expensive, one-way business class tickets.
Consequently, prosecutors argued that Alfozan lacks any incentive to stay for his trial. They believe he remains a significant flight risk to authorities.
Finally, a federal judge denied the engineer's request for bail. Judge Alex Tse stated that the risk of Alfozan failing to appear in court is too high.
If a jury convicts him, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison. He could also pay a fine of $250,000 for these actions.
