The death toll from a violent raid on a Nigerian village has climbed to 48. Authorities and human rights groups are investigating the tragedy.

Gunmen recently attacked a remote village in Taraba state, Nigeria. Police now confirm that 48 people died during the raid.

Initially, officials reported only 10 deaths. However, teams found more bodies on Sunday in the surrounding area.

Also, some victims died by drowning while fleeing. Others suffered fatal injuries in nearby bushes during the chaos.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International reports a higher number of 52 deaths. They gathered this data from local sources and community members.

The violent attack started shortly after midday prayers. The gunmen continued their rampage for approximately four hours.

Next, the attackers looted local shops for cash and food. They also stole several motorcycles abandoned by fleeing residents.

Then, police officers arrived at the scene after receiving distress calls. By that time, the gunmen had already escaped.

As a result, officers began patrolling the area to restore order. The police spokesperson noted that the difficult terrain hindered their search efforts.

Still, survivors describe a terrifying scene of confusion. Many people ran in different directions to find safety from the shooters.

Finally, Amnesty International is calling for a formal investigation. They believe the authorities fail to protect rural communities from these armed gangs.

In addition, violence from various armed groups remains a major problem in Nigeria. These gangs frequently attack, kidnap, and demand ransoms.

Now, officials expect insecurity to become a key issue in upcoming elections. Citizens continue to demand better safety measures from their government.
