President Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro traded personal insults during a tense debate before Brazil's upcoming presidential run-off.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro recently met for a televised debate. This event occurred just one week before the upcoming presidential run-off election. Both candidates sought to win over undecided voters during this broadcast.

However, the debate featured many personal attacks rather than policy discussions. Analysts worry this aggressive tone might discourage people from voting. The two candidates remain very close in recent opinion polls.

Also, the first round of voting on October 4 showed a tight race. Flávio Bolsonaro secured a narrow lead by earning 47% of the vote. Lula followed closely with 45.2% support. Neither candidate reached the 50% threshold needed to win immediately.

Next, the candidates will meet for another debate this Friday. This event takes place only two days before the final election. History shows the candidate who finishes second in the first round rarely wins the final vote.

Meanwhile, experts criticized the chaotic format of the recent debate. Candidates walked around the studio while their opponent spoke. This movement led to several tense and heated exchanges between the two men.

For instance, Lula refused to stand near his opponent. He claimed he wanted distance from the Bolsonaro family and their alleged ties to paramilitary groups. Bolsonaro denied these accusations and called them fake news.

After that, Bolsonaro accused the Workers' Party of widespread corruption. He even wrote the word "corrupt" on his hand to make a point. He also questioned Lula about rising crime rates during his previous time in office.

Finally, Lula responded with sharp remarks about the senator's father, Jair Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro currently serves a prison sentence for plotting against the government. Both men used the platform to trade insults rather than detailed plans for the country.
