Congressional candidate Brad Lander was released from Israeli military custody after helping farmers in the West Bank. Dozens of other volunteers remain detained.
Democratic candidate Brad Lander recently regained his freedom. Israeli soldiers held him in custody briefly on Wednesday. He was assisting Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest.
Meanwhile, the incident took place in the occupied West Bank. Lander was near the village of Nahalin outside Bethlehem at the time. Soldiers and police detained him alongside many other volunteers.
Also, the group Rabbis for Human Rights organized the event. They report that Israeli forces took about 80 people into custody. These volunteers included citizens from several different countries.
Next, the volunteers helped local farmers for two hours. Israeli military members arrived and stopped their work. They claimed the participants entered a closed military zone.
However, many people remain in detention today. Lander mentioned that rabbis and international volunteers are still being held. He called for their immediate release from custody.
After that, Lander explained his own experience on social media. He said the Israeli military gave him a formal warning. He believes his public profile helped him gain his freedom.
Still, Lander noted his current political status during the encounter. He reminded the officials that he is only a congressional nominee. He does not hold an office yet.
Finally, the volunteers traveled from many different nations. The group included people from America, Israel, and Palestine. Others came from Britain and Canada to support the farmers.
As a result, the situation remains tense in the region. The Israeli government did not provide a comment on the detention. Officials have yet to respond to media requests.
