A UAE court sentenced eight people to life in prison for trafficking weapons to Sudan's army and running a money-laundering network.
A court in the United Arab Emirates recently handed down life sentences to eight individuals. These people faced charges for illegal weapons trafficking and money laundering related to Sudan's military.
Also, the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal confirmed these findings on Thursday. State news agency WAM reported that the group operated an integrated scheme to move military gear.
Next, the investigation revealed that the defendants used fake documents. They utilized various companies and bank accounts within the UAE to hide their illegal financial activity.
Furthermore, these criminals moved funds to mask the origin and destination of their arms deals. The court ruled that these actions directly threatened the interests of the UAE.
After that, the judge ordered the seizure of all weapons and communication tools. Authorities will deport the eight individuals once they finish their prison terms.
Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions between the UAE and Sudan remain high. The Sudanese military previously accused Abu Dhabi of arming the Rapid Support Forces.
However, the UAE continues to deny these serious allegations. The civil war in Sudan has caused widespread suffering and destroyed many lives since April 2023.
As a result, more than 14 million people have fled their homes. Many citizens now face extreme poverty and dangerous food shortages across the region.
Recently, drone strikes hit a busy city market in Nyala. These attacks killed over 100 people, including many women and children.
Still, medical teams struggle to assist the massive number of injured victims. Doctors Without Borders reported treating over 150 wounded patients in a single hospital.
Finally, the United Nations has raised concerns about ongoing violence. Officials previously accused the Rapid Support Forces of committing war crimes in Darfur.
