A luxury cruise ship on a world tour suspended operations in Cambodia due to rising fuel costs, leaving many passengers stranded.

The cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey recently halted its world tour in Cambodia. High fuel costs forced the operator to pause all voyages. Passengers now face unexpected delays in the coastal city of Sihanoukville.

Meanwhile, the company reports that fuel prices spiked significantly this year. Monthly costs per cabin jumped from $1,800 to $8,000 in parts of Asia. These rising expenses made the current travel model unsustainable.

Next, the operator attempted to money by slowing down the ship. They also spent more time in ports to limit fuel usage. However, these small changes failed to cover the massive price increases.

After that, the company announced a sixty-day period for financial restructuring. They hope to raise more capital to resume operations. Currently, the future of the long-term cruise remains uncertain for everyone involved.

Also, about 200 passengers were on board during the sudden stop. The ship left Belfast in October 2024 for a planned multi-year journey. The vessel was designed to visit nearly 150 countries over three and a half years.

Then, the company began helping guests find temporary living arrangements. Some travelers moved into local hotels in Cambodia. Passenger Holly Hennessey remains hopeful that the ship will eventually set sail again.

However, many residents paid large sums for their cabins. Prices for permanent stays range from $120,000 to $440,000. Renting a space costs at least $3,500 per month for those on board.

Finally, the ship previously faced delays during its initial departure from Belfast. Repair issues kept the vessel docked for several months last year. This new setback leaves many passengers waiting for a resolution in Southeast Asia.
