French police arrested nearly 1,000 individuals following large protests across the country. Demonstrators voiced frustration over living costs.

French authorities arrested nearly 1,000 people following a new day of mass protests across the country. Hundreds of thousands of citizens gathered to demonstrate against the high cost of living and poor school conditions. Most of the events remained peaceful throughout the day.

However, violence broke out in several cities as the evening arrived. Police fired tear gas and used water cannons to push back crowds. Protesters in Marseille set fire to street barricades. Meanwhile, individuals in Bordeaux ripped wooden boards off a local shop.

Government officials noted that the scale of destruction stayed lower than last weekend. That previous event caused some of the worst disorder in modern French history. The interior ministry estimated that 410,000 people joined the protests this Saturday. Labor unions claimed the actual number reached 800,000.

Also, the government deployed 70,000 police officers to maintain order. President Emmanuel Macron ordered that only groups recognized by trade unions could organize demonstrations. Courts have already jailed hundreds of people for looting and arson charges.

Next, clashes erupted in Paris after a peaceful march concluded. Police used an elite unit to handle the situation. Some protesters threw objects at officers. In response, police officers used batons against masked individuals who damaged a car dealership.

After that, the situation became tense in other regions. Young people in Marseille blocked streets with metal sheets and burned trash bins. Police in Lyon used tear gas to disperse crowds in a restricted area. Some students reported difficulty seeing because of the thick gas.

Still, protesters expressed deep frustration with the government. Many participants feel abandoned and angry about taxes. One teenager stated that his generation wants real change in France. He claimed the demonstrations will continue until leaders address their demands.

Finally, authorities reported two people suffered serious injuries during the unrest. Officials expect the total arrest numbers to climb higher. Similar protests occurred in other European nations like Albania and Belgium this weekend as well.
